NORMAL !!

the shocking moment when you realize you're not the special person you thought you were
when it finally hits you " you are NORMAL", maybe even less than normal; you are not talented, not smart, not pretty, not thoughtful and not even as kind or friendly or hardworking as you think.
you suddenly realize the scary fact that you most probably will end up leading a NORMAL life
you will not change the world , you will not gain a Nobel prize, you are just you

this is when reality hits, and gravity takes you down the hard way
and at that time you start remembering your castles in the air and think " oh my God, was i blind or what!"

hopefully, it's just a phase

Rage, Love and Zombies

what drives the human motor is either love ( to someone, something material or something immaterial) or else it's anger ( of yourself , of some one, of something)
this keeps us motivated, it's like a fuel that keep pushing us; either forward or backwards,

some people might say that anger will pull you backwards while love will push you forward, well not true, not always anyway.

but the real problem is when you run low on both types of fuel ( love and anger)
this is when you start slowing down and loosing the power that kept you moving.

it's at that time that you start feeling like a zombie;
you're not the living you
and there is no reason for you to die
so you live like a zombie, half alive half dead, motivation lost , anger fading away, and no more hopes or dreams can find their way into your brain on heart anymore, simply because you have no energy to keep dreaming and no motivation to keep you hoping.

HBBC: Hijab removed

a couple of weeks ago i found a new profile picture for a friend of mine on my Facebook homepage
without her Hijab
that girl was one of my role models at a time, i used to look up to her
she is smart, brilliant, talented and has one of the most skillful minds i've ever known
that was shocking for me, because i am a person who cherishes the Idea of hijab
but it got me thinking, why do they do it?
why do i find a new girl removing her hijab like every month?
why do they not only uncover their hair but, in most cases, they go to the extreme
how can some one be covered from head to toe and then the following day be in bikini swim wear!!
were they forced to wearing it , i don't think so
are they bored of it?
is the temptation of showing people their skin so tempting?!

i got a conclusion that can NOT be applied to every one
but i believe a large percentage of them are just having a problem with their self confidence

maybe they think that by showing their body and hair they prove to others that they are beautiful
maybe their self esteem need the assurance of being attractive to the eyes

but i cannot find an excuse
sorry, i've really tried to be "civil"
but seriously i despise the act
it is not a game
although i always say that no girl should wear Hijab unless she is a hundred percent convinced and ready, but once you do it , it's a life time contract , we cannot play with God

i pity those girls really , beaceuse i know they probably have a serious emotional disorder to do this , for no one can taste the beauty and safety of Hijab and then take it off

Nala, The solitary reaper

a strange combination of character, a scattered mind, yet a straight soul
she knows she doesn't belong here
she knows there is no home for her
she is a stranger, was and will always be a stranger
always the odd one out
the geek among the empty heads
the empty headed among the geeks
the conservative among the liberals
and the liberal among the conservatives

there is no home for her, no place where she belongs
no one to relate to
no one to trust or love
no one is close enough
no one is important enough
and not a single person knows her
not a single person can see
but maybe, just maybe she opens at the close

but so far, in her eternal search for home, she only finds comfort in her solitude.

The great Dictator

  • we want to live by each others happiness not by each others misery.
  • this world has room for everyone, the good earth is rich.
  • we have lost the way. greed has poisoned our soles.
  • we have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in, machinery that give abundance has left us in want, our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind , we think too much and feel too little.
  • more than machinery we need humanity, more than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness, without these qualities life will be violent and all will be lost
  • The airplane and the radio has brought us closer together, the very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood and the unity of us all
  • to those who can hear me i say: do not despair, the misery that is now upon us is with the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress .
  • the hate of men will pass and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people, and so long as men die, liberty will not perish
  • you are not machines, you are not cattle, you are MEN, you have the love of humanity in your hearts, you don't hate, only the unloved hates; the unloved and the unnatural
  • Soldiers, don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty
  • in the seventeenth chapter of saint Luke it it stated:

"The kingdom of God is within man"
Not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men; in you, the people.

  • You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.
  • Then in the name of democracy let's use that power, let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security.
  • By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie. They do not fulfill their promise, they never will.
  • Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people.
  • Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, do away with greed, with hate and intolerance.
  • Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.

Soldiers! In the name of democracy, let us all unite!

  • Look up! The clouds are lifting, the sun is breaking through. We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world. A kind new world where men will rise above their hate and brutality.
  • The soul of man has been given wings, and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow, into the light of hope, into the future.

Turkey

i had so much fun at Istanbul, it was an amazing trip, made a lot of new friends and gained a lot of experience , it was my first time to travel abroad and my first time to travel alone without my family , bu i really loved it and turkey is a beautiful place to go, jut brilliant
However the sad thing was that i thought i was to see the capital of the Islamic rule
it was so disappointing to see how the people of this country forgot all about their origins howw religion is an accessory to their lives, how alcohol is a normal thing every night, how people are dressed, how the relation ships are and how fasting during ramadan is something weird in an ISLAMIC country !!
that was really sad

with the way things are turkey is running fast towards being a major power, but i just hope it it also improves from the religious aspect as well as the political.

i believe most people there are stuck in a trap and lost in principles; the can no longer connect to their Islamic roots and yet they are no fully European and they are not satisfied with that either
i thing it's a hard thing not knowing what your identity is and not settling on a group to join

God bless turkey and guide it to the right path

family comes first

it's so strange what i feel now
we were never so close
never a normal family
we cannot be called brothers and sisters
we cannot be called friends
we rarely see each other
we hardly talk
maybe we don't even think about each other

but the weird thing is how i feel when we DO meet, when we DO talk , wen we DO give some attention to the presence of each other
this is when that strange feeling attacks me, a feeling of belonging, YES we belong together, yes and despite everything we are a perfect match, we fully understand each other even though we do not talk much or know each other well, it's a true feeling of belonging, it's love in its purest form, it is safety, security and a strange sensation of happiness

i hope we become closer because as we get older we will sure regret how far we are from each other for no matter how popular you are or how many friends you have, nothing and no one can give you the feeling of being surrounded by your family

i hope we learn the true meaning of "family comes first "
and i only hope we do not have to learn it the hard way

DESPITE EVERYTHING I DO LOVE MY FAMILY

fruitful discussion

"the precious qualities of humanity has been turned off"

this was the best sentence to describe all what we wanted to say, we talked about bad people and good people but the best argument was about those in the grey area, those who start good and end up bad, do they still have the light in their hearts or is all the innocence in them gone?, are they aware that they're turning into bad people or is it the usual belief that I AM RIGHT and everyone else is wrong?, is it possible for the grey people to go back to the white area or is the black dust too hard to take off

and above all
is it possible for the precious qualities of humanity to be turned on again?

i like to believe that it's possible, hard, but yet possible, because as I have written a while ago i believe people do not change, they only develop and grow with accumulated experiences, good and bad experiences.
maybe one bad experience can pull someone from white to grey or even pitch black, while it takes a million good experiences and good deeds to clean the mess done by that one bad experience, but still the outcome is priceless
whenever you meet someone grey think that if you do him/her something good it might be the inch they need to reconnect with the good in them

there is nothing more satisfying than changing the life of a fellow human being, it gives YOU positive energy and maybe makes even more happy than the person you helped

but the scary thing is, will the day come when I turn grey
i hope not, and i shall do my best to hod tight to the light and the white, and i believe the best road to that is volunteer work
when you see how others are less privileged than yourself, this is how you keep your hart tender and your mind alert, this is the best way to understand how your your problems are minimum in comparison to other peoples problems, and this is like a safety belt to keep you away from the grey and the black

in the memory of a beautiful night and a very fruitful conversation :)

colour illusion

well first of all this post indicates that i suffer from a serious mental illness , it's just a thought that has been haunting me for a couple of days i have to let it out.

COLOURS !!
ok so here is the thought
what if we see colours differently , what if what i see blue ohter people see red
what if the wavelength of these rays of light and colour affect how these colours are tranlated in our brains
for example i see blue as BLUE what if another person sees what i see blue as BLUE
but i was taught that this colour is named blue , while that other person was taught that this colour means blue this way we can both be looking at the same colour each of us seeing it differently but at the same time we call it the same name
it's impossible to see through other people's eyes , so we can not put such a thought out of question

well , after reading this again i came to the conclusion that i am messed up real bad

people do not change

i believe that people do not change, they develop.
when a seed becomes a plant , it isn't due to change , it's due to growth and development
it's the same thing with humans, one cannot change. habbits may change, appearance, way of thinking,.. etc
however it is all due to the accumulation of experiences , for example, when some one is too romantic , then after a year, you meet him and he becomes so indifferent , did he change?!
no he didn't , maybe he got hurt and descided to think and feel things in a calmer way , but then he found that calm was not good enough so in another year he descided to be insenstive or cold.
he did not change he developed due to a life experience , this development or what people call change would've never happened if it wasn't for this accumulation of life experiences.

another example is people who became more selfish due to examples of selfish people who succeed and selfless people who end up miserable
and so on with examples that never end
simpy it's the jurney of life , DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH
affects every creature in this world , plant, animal and indeed humans

my wizard

since my early childhood i always go for signs metaphores and wise talkings, and i think such things affected my personaloty so much and helped me shape my self a good deal.
one of these things was the Harry Potter series of books
the first book started when Harry was 11 , so was i when I first read it
and since then , every year in the cairo book faire, just a couple of months before my birthday , i go buy the new book of harry potter , he grows a year older , as do i
till i was 17 , that's when it all ended by the last page of the last book.

" you should have died , died rather than betray you friends, just as we would've done for you"
this is a quotation from the 3rd book ' prisoner of azkaban" it became my life motto for a very long time , and still is along with others

castles in the air

every now and then i jump into a new character, i live with the head of a different person and build the new circumstances that fits with it , in my head ofcourse.
the characters varie with accord to my mood but mostly they are drawn by either a book, a movie or anyone's life but mine;
so for long 7 years i was a which, affected by my beloved harry potter , that was PERFECT. i was raised up by this book, and I LOVE IT .

for some other time I was bella , and OH GOD what dreadfull time i had trying to live in romance , which all came in vain ofcourse, but learned alot of it which is " NOT TO READ ROMANCE OFTEN CUZ IF IT EVER HAPPENS THAT IT AFFECTS MY LIFE AGAIN IT WILL MISERABLE " :D

for some other time i was V , that was the most amazing time of my life , and when ever i watch that movie - which is too often- i live again in the character and the story for a long time , i like to believe that it is one very close to my real me , if there is a real me, and i would love it if this is really tha thack background and frame of my character and that the changes i'm speaking about here are only is a small manageable portion of me.

the picture of dorian gray was indeed a turning point in my life, it took me out of the short romance phase into phylosophy, and got me into understanding alot of things i wouldn't have understood till i was atleast 40 , so it was a great time savor. however, i cannot help but think that it made me a cold person for a while, it didn't make me sad , not at all i was so much satisfied from the inside but it kinda made me sober from the outside, at that phase people used to tell me that i seem 10 years older than my real age .

and now, the thing that made me write this was JOSEPHENE MARCH ,
i was reading little women last week, ana amazing book with a lottt of lectures however , never boring. calm and exciting , sad and joyfull, it's our every day lives as little women put down in the most beautiful manner in such a great book,
and every girl who reads this book will for sure see her reflection in the mirror of one of the four sisters, my mirror was almost screaming , JO.
it was great all through the novel to my reflection in the words , however i don't like the ending so much. and would so much love my castle in the air to land safely on ground. it made me a little anxious about by future though. but worrying wont change a thing and ia have came to a believe, - a while ago- that God has a wayyy better plan for me than all the castles in the air, and oh he is sooooo good at making such plans, so i shall leave it to him and live it as it is. and i shall accept it eitherways and hope i will like it.

Maybe i'm crazy a good deal, too moody, change into too many characters and swich lives often, but it is really amusing to live a thousand lives inside my own, to be many people in one lifetime, and to always have what i want , even if only in my head.

words i never got to tell you

it's been too long since i last saw you or hugged you or laughed with u on the stupidest jokes
and yet , that's my first time to write about you, because when it comes to writing it hurts too much to know that you'll never write again , maybe you never knew, although i often told you, YOU ARE MY FAVORIT WRITER, i miss your notes , your tags, your passion about guitar , whenever i hear jazz, whenever i see a saxophone , i remeber you , certain roads we rode through together, coffee houses or restaurants where we often went out . i still can hear you and see you there, every time i pass by, every time i buy a coke , every time i read a note
it always amazed me how much talent you had , how inspiring your simplest words were , how far your imagination went . I always thought you'll grow up to be the best novelist in the world
i used to envy you for your fertile imagination, it amazed me how you were always smiling , and how you manage to draw a wide smile on every face in the room just by being there

I believe soo much in God , i know he has his reason, and i know it's a sin to disagree, however , MY world lost alot when you left
the ammount of talent, sweetness and beauty in the whole world was dangerously reduced by ur departure

I never got to tell you how much i love
I never thought about telling you how much you meant to me
It kills me that i didn't phone you alot
It tortures me that i cannot remeber when i last saw you, what you last told me
I never got to see your last smile , i never got to hug you one last time
but be sure that where ever you are, in my heart you'll always be my favorit NINA

to my dear friend NINA , you are sincerely loved and seriously missed

Book review: The palace of dreams

Reviewed BY JEFF K. HILL

PALACE OF DREAMS
By Ismail Kadare
English translation by Barbara Bray
205 pp
1990 ~ New York: William Morrow & Company
$19.00

IN MANY classics of magical realism, such as Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, the novels themselves and works of fiction within them interpenetrate one another. The Palace of Dreams, by Ismail Kadare, is its own dream, a nightmare of totalitarianism in which work is life and government controls the subconscious.

Inside the vast and labyrinthine Tabir Sarrail, the dreams of the citizens of a Balkan empire, in a nameless time hovering between myth and history, are collected, sorted, and interpreted, in search of the crucial Master-Dreams which involve the security of the Empire and of the Sovereign.

Like the dreams in The Palace of Dreams, the novel itself has undergone both interpretation and misinterpretation. Upon first publication in Albania in 1981 under the title Nenpunesi i pallatit te enderrave, the novel was immediately banned by government decree. Readers of the English version are confronted with the same issues of interpretation that are developed in the book, as it is Barbara Bray's translation from the French translation, by Jusuf Vrioni, from Kadare's original Albanian.

(To a frightening extent the information we all receive today is selected for us, interpreted, and that interpretation is further interpreted, and it is that, without knowledge of the original or credence to the interpreter, which we guide our lives by.)

Kadare (b. 1936), also a poet and journalist living in exile in France since 1990, says he began writing in 1962 as a challenge to communist conformism in his native country. The League of Albanian Writers and Artists, however, has criticized his role as "a member of the parliament of the dictatorial Albania." Ina Daci, an Albanian expatriate, has called Kadare a "spoiled child" who enjoyed special privileges not granted other writers because of the high esteem afforded him by the international community.

He has been a perpetual nominee for the Nobel Prize, and the Velija Foundation awards an annual literary prize in his name, won several years ago by a Czech writer of similar sensibilities, Milan Kundera. And while Publishers Weekly (25 March 1996) praises Kadare as the "master of the political parable," the League questions his motives, claiming his fiction merely cloaks politics in history and folklore. But it is perhaps those very tactics that allowed him to continue writing during the oppressions of dictator Enver Hoxha (1945-1985). Though highly outspoken on political matters (most recently in his unabashedly nationalistic pleas for independence for Kosova), Kadare rejects labels such as dissident, insisting he is plainly and simply a writer.

Kadare has stated that The Palace of Dreams arose out of his ambition to create a hell of his own, because "the concept of right starts with hell." The sense of dread and unease, often self-imposed by the characters, easily recalls Franz Kafka's The Trial. The palace itself, full of corridors endless and identical, resembles the mind, and the labyrinths of Jorge Luis Borges:

"He wandered the corridors in a state of bewilderment ....
He walked on for a long time, hoping to meet someone from
whom he could ask the way. But there was no one in sight.
Sometimes he would think he heard footsteps ahead of him,
around a bend in the corridor, but as soon as he got there the
sounds would seem to recede in another direction, perhaps
on the floor above, perhaps on that below....

"On he went. The passages seemed alternately familiar
and strange. He couldn't hear so much as a door being opened.
He went up a broad staircase to the floor above, then came
back again and soon found himself on the floor below.
Everywhere he met with the same silence, the same emptiness."

But what begins suffused in suspense soon reveals the invisible essence of reality. What critic Bruce Bawer calls "coincidence and weird intrigue" are really forces of magical realism penetrating the mysteries and impossibilities.

The first paragraph brings us immediately into a different world when we see "the uncertain light of dawn" on "no ordinary day." The protagonist, Mark-Alem, is off to his new job in the Palace of Dreams. He is a member of the family Quprili, whose name means "bridge" and symbolizes the access they provide between the worlds of dream and reality, between hell and right. Throughout the novel Mark-Alem imagines himself going by his ancestral names (Gjon, Gjergj, or Gjorg -- all found in other Kadare novels), and using versions of his patronym (Ura, Qyprija, Kurpija, or Kuprili) sometimes to hide, other times to claim his heritage, but always signifying his shifting realities.

The various dreams he encounters, though all invented by Kadare, are no different from actual dreams, and serve to highlight the characteristic magical realist ways of seeing things like a child. A fine example of this is the dream in which two men find a fallen rainbow. Of course everyone knows rainbows cannot fall intact from the sky, and yet for any child this could be perfectly plausible. The men dust it off, repaint it, and try to raise it up again, but it refuses to come back to life.

At the Palace, Mark-Alem begins his career in Selection, where dreams are weeded out. He quickly is promoted to Interpretation, where creativity reigns. No symbols or keys are employed against which a dream can be matched; each dream must be individually interpreted, just as art is a creative process, and magical realism does not reflect reality, but interprets reality in a unique way. By this process the very interpretation of dreams creates a new reality. Even the Vizier, head of the Quprili family, tells Mark-Alem that some people "think it's the world of anxieties and dreams ... that governs this one." But in both his positions, when Mark-Alem encounters the one dream that predicts the events to come, he hesitates to take action: he doesn't classify it as "Useless," nor does he interpret it benignly. It is subsequently chosen as the Master-Dream, which serves to guide government policy.

In his novel Broken April (Prilli i thyer, 1980), Kadare has Bessian, a famous writer, proclaim all really important things are "at once terrible, absurd, and fatal." Similarly, in The Palace of Dreams, nothing is more important here than the Master-Dream, and so it is interpreted as no less than a threat of treason from within the Quprili family.

At any point the characters might turn off the road they are traveling, but events have taken on the force of destiny -- the dream is dreamt, the meaning revealed, the fate of the family is set -- since the completion of the bridge centuries before, literally in stone. A banquet is held and an epic is sung: "Ballad of the Bridge with Three Arches," from whence the Quprili family derives its name and its path, and in which its historic political importance is proudly recounted. The Sovereign immediately unleashes his jealous rage. They do not conform, so they are punished. This is a fine magical realist example of how not only tales but the facts and things they encompass break free to become a magical part of historical reality.

The Quprili home is invaded by government troops and a member of the family, the suspected threat in the Master-Dream, is taken into custody. But the head of the family, the Vizier (who may be Kadare himself), does not respond to the outrage as family members in other Kadare novels do, in accordance with the 14th-century Kanun of Leke Dukagjini, a code of vengeance.

"This was the ancient reflex of the Quprilis, who in similar
circumstances, scores of times in the history of their family,
assumed the mask of unreality."

This is, perhaps, the one characteristic which sets them apart from the Empire and the Sovereign. As the accused man is led away, the Vizier looks "into the distance, into some mysterious depths ...." He is looking beyond the limits of reality.

It is the nearness of relationship between the bridge and the family, extending far beyond the name, which is this novel's all-encompassing characteristic of magical realism. The very completion of the bridge, as detailed in Kadare's The Three-Arched Bridge (Ura me tri harqu, 1978), leads to horrors impossible to foresee, an unintended escalation of the spilling of revenge blood as depicted in Broken April, and ultimately not to freedom, but to the oppressive Empire served by the Palace of Dreams. Mark-Alem's inaction, as if he were made of stone, results in the loss of an uncle. Only at the end does he realize that his

"patronymic bore within it, like a secret message, the destiny
of the Quprilis for generation after generation. And so that
the bridge might endure, a man was sacrificed in its
building, walled up in its foundations. And although so much
time had gone by since, the traces of his blood had come
down to the present generation. So that the Quprilis
might endure ... "
Immurement is a universal motif of folklore, and this particular version is Kadare's own interpretation of a Greek myth about a bridge over the river Arta.

Albania is only now awakening from its isolated past. In his writing, Kadare has built a bridge across the chasm that separates the customs of vengeance in ancient Albania, and the rigid conformism of communist rule, from the modern concepts of freedom and the rule of law in 21st century society. The Quprilis are a bridge to that envisioned future of humanitarianism, as represented by the Vizier, from out of a personal hell.

The Palace of Dreams is an intriguing novel that easily drew me into its strange world and held my interest until the end. Many of the key elements of magical realism can be identified in the style and execution, but Kadare rejects the label of magical realist, and his novel ultimately veers away from the category. In Mark-Alem's gray existence, life only flares up a moment before death. The repeated suppression of his Albanian name, and that of his country -- unlike the prideful recount of the family epic -- is what allows him to survive. Such a strategy of silence in both his writing and his living might have insured Kadare's survival during the Hoxha regime. This dreary negation of life is the opposite of the atmosphere of enchantment that suffuses the writing of Kundera and the best magical realist novels. The Vizier sees the beauty of life on the other side of totalitarianism, but Kadare denies us that vision. Perhaps he does this out of a fear that has arisen from his own writing: no one can predict the shape reality will actually take.

failure

" some failure in life is inevitable, it is impossible to live without failing at something , unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all , and so , you fail by deffault "
